Designing a multi-platform streaming service from the ground up for DTV GO

Come for the sports stay for the entertainment. The benefit of cable or satellite without the hardware, DIRECTV GO is a one-stop entertainment destination for Latin American audiences looking to stream live programming, news, sports, and on-demand content. With DIRECTV GO the team was tasked with designing a VOD app for multiple platforms from the ground up.

The Process

  1. Participated in multiple design workshops to identify the key UX challenges with the pre-existing in-market application, and conceptualize a variety of ideas to solve the key UX challenges.

  2. Collaborated with interaction and visual designers to turn wireframes and prototypes into animated mockups and motion specs.

  3. Lead a team of motion designs to create, and implement motion style across multiple platforms.

  4. Worked with developers to translate design vision and the user experience into the finished product

The Design

As Lead Motion Designer I worked with the interaction and visual designers to come up with a motion style guide that effectively reflected DIRECTV's updated brand and serve the user in the most efficient manner possible. At the same time I worked with the motion design team to apply that style consistently over multiple screens and platforms. While collaborating with the development team to properly implement those animations.

The Outcome

After a year of design and development, we launched on 8 platforms in over 8 countries in multiple languages. DTV Go is available on Fire TV, Android, Android TV, IOS, Roku, Tizen, and Chromecast

Selected User Flows

Creating a seamless sign up experience was key to our stake holders at DIRECTV and a slick motion design helps users get frictionlessly get streaming

We found that scenarios where users know exactly what content they are looking for are as common as those where the user has no particular content in mind. In all cases users have criteria. Our job is to ensure a smooth browsing experience where things like skeleton states were put in place to reduce perceived loading times.
